J. Lance Maidlow M.Eng. P.Eng.
Lance resides in Pinellas County Florida where he is the founder and owner of Logis LLC – a consulting firm assisting organizations in applying Open GIS concepts to optimizing business processes.
He has had a wide and varied career as professional engineer, software developer, business owner and consultant. He has been blessed with an ability to foresee technology trends and how they can be integrated into practical business used primarily in the engineering, government and utility industries.
As a professional engineer he worked for notable Canadian engineering firms including Proctor and Redfern, Kilborn Engineering and Associated Engineering rising from a position as project engineer, to department head and ultimately to project manager on some of the largest regional water and sewer projects in western Canada.
While at Proctor and Redfern, he was actively involved with the project that developed the Storm Water Management Model (SWMM) and applied to software in numerous projects. At Associated Engineering, he initiated the early integration of total station survey technology with AutoCAD. This ultimately led to establishing one of the more successful Autodesk dealerships and third party development companies – Kanotech.
Some notable accomplishments of Kanotech include:
1. Grew to a staff of approximately 50 with offices across Canada and in Hong Kong.
2. One of the first and largest Autodesk dealers in Western Canada
3. Architected and managed the first true spatial database integrated with AutoCAD map
4. Developer of notable products including the Field Based Survey System(FBS), MunMap, GeoSQL and Spatialist.
5. Licensed technology to Autodesk that laid the foundation for what is now AutoCAD Map.
6. Deployed the Geo/SQL and Spatialist GIS applications in a wide variety of industries including:
- Local government and regional governments
- Oil and gas
- Transportation (road, rail and light rapid transit)
- Water and sewer utilities
- Power distribution and transmission
- Cable and fiber design and management
- Pipeline management
7. Early adopter and developer for the Autodesk MapGuide web based mapping solution.
After selling Kanotech in 1999, Lance acted as a consultant to Autodesk Inc. where he developed their world wide Local Government Industry Plan and undertook a number of assignments largely in Florida. He introduced the Munsys software to Autodesk and assisted in the early negotiations for Autodesk to resell Munsys under the Autodesk Public Works solutions. He was a founder of Open Spatial Inc., the firm established to market and support Autodesk in their initial deployments.
Since 2007, he has been actively involved in the deployment of Landor’s RADE technology and in the United States and more recently with the integration of digital pen solutions from Adapx into modern workflows.
